This mission work began August, 2005. This family was chosen to start a new congregation in the northern most part of Ensenada, where many of the children from the City of Children are from. Below you will find reports and pictures from Reyes on the new work.
Reyes Medina Higuerón:
Reyes says "I am originally from the state of Hidalgo in west central Mexico. I am married to Crescenciana Hernandes Bautista and have three children, Jorge David (15), Abigail (12), Anna (10)."
Reyes was converted and baptized in 1998 in Decatur Alabama by Justo Dorantes. From 2000 to 2002 my wife, Crescenciana, and I both attended ILEB the Bible Institute in Toluca, Mexico.
In August of 2005 we moved to Ensenada, Baja, Mexico and started a new church in Colonia 89, a suburb on the north part of the city.
In Feb. 2006 we purchaced property with a house where the church can meet.

Baja Summer Mission Trip to Colonia 89 (7/21 to 7/28)
Trip Overview
On Friday, 7/18 a seven member advanced team traveled to Ensenada, Mexico to meet Ashley Churchman (now living in Mexico) in order to prepare things for the large team (58) which arrived on Monday 7/21. Both the advanced and large teams were blessed with uneventful border crossings and we always thank the Lord for that!
Tuesday though Sunday the 65 Americans served the Mexican people living in “Colonia 89” which is one of the poorest parts of the city by providing medical and dental care, construction, marriage and leadership classes, cosmetology training, and an awesome vacation Bible school. On the final Sunday we had a wonderful combined worship service with them where Tim Rine preached and John Dyas translated. Dell and Lori Wood gave out certificates to those who had attended all their marriage classes on “The Blessing.” And Debbie Scott gave out certificates to the ladies who had successfully completed her cosmetology training. After services we enjoyed an authentic Mexican potluck hosted by the hermanas in the church.
This year’s theme – “Family of God”
Special Highlights
- The church has grown considerably from last year
- The Pleasant Ridge Church of Christ built the church a new auditorium and a separate four room building for children’s classes.
- The active membership has almost doubled in number from last year.
- Several families and 4 men in particular have stepped up to accept more responsibility.
- One of them, Jesus, was a man we found last year door knocking. He has become one of the biggest sources of encouragement for Reyes.
- Reyes and his family will be moving up to the house purchased two years ago where the church has been meeting before building the new building. It is located one block from the new building.
- Dell and Lori were able to give some great help on marriage and parenting to the church members there.
- Tim Rine was able to give four leadership classes to the most committed of the Colonia 89 men and preach and inspiriting lesson to the entire church.
- We had some awesome devotionals each morning and evening which blessed our team.
- Chuck and Shar Lee did a wonderful job of multiplying the loves and fishes… and no one got sick this year.
Greatest needs we identified
- We found many children who will not be able to attend school because their parents can’t afford it. We are developing a scholarship program to help.
- We discovered a family who cares for children who are in essence abandoned out of their own funds. We are looking into how we might help the 89 church help them.
- Reyes and Chanita need help in training men and women in the church for greater spiritual growth and responsibility. We will provide training materials and opportunities to them.
- The drug addiction, alcoholism, gang activity, theft, and vandalism make the area where the church building is located a very insecure place. We are taking steps to make the property as secure as possible and we are investigating ways to help them start some type of neighborhood watch program and we will attempt to talk to the mayor of Ensenada in the near future to find out what can be done to increase police protection to that area.
- The children’s Bible classes are in desperate need of organization and curriculum. Ashley will be working all year on improving those two areas.
- Reyes, Chanita, David, Abigail, Ana, Ashley, and the emerging church leaders all need a great deal of prayer to be able to utilize all of God’s power, protection, and direction in the upcoming year.

Colonia 89 Report - May 2008
Monday, May 26 This morning we had the blessing to have the group from the Granny White church of Christ with us; they started working on Amelia’s house. They had two groups, one building and the other visiting families. We bought the food sets and then we prayed with each family we visited. After visiting they went back to the work site for lunch and work until it was time for them to return to the city of children where they had activities with the children. I helped Adolfo and Eliu at the church property for they are building the walls for the children’s classroom.
Tuesday, May 27 This morning we thank God for the group returned and they continued with the construction, which is going very fast. I took part of the group visiting families and we took a set of food for them and had a special prayer with them. After the group returned to city of children I went and helped with the construction of the walls for the children’s classroom. In the afternoon we had class for the members and this time we talked about Matthew 28:18-20, Matthew 16:18 and Romans 16:16.
Wednesday, May 28 We thank God for the Granny white group for they are here this morning to finish Amelia’s home. This is going to be a great blessing for this elderly woman for she lives by herself in a room made out of pieces of plywood and a tarp for a roof. We thank the group for sharing their blessing with Amelia. Today we went and visited more families and delivered a set of food and we also had a prayer with each family. We went back to the house after delivering the food. The group got finished with the house and had a prayer for Amelia in front of her new house; they also took pictures to share with the rest of their congregation. Amelia and some of the sisters of the church made deer burritos, beans, rice and salsa for the group as a way of gratitude. In the afternoon I got my sermon ready for Sunday.

We visited with Petra and invited her for church she said she wants to come but her husband drinks a lot and he won’t let her come to church with us. In the evening we all went to Maneadero to be there for the campaign, their theme is the power of God.

One of the things that the church of Christ in Colonia 89 has though about is the elderly people, we see that there are rehabilitation centers for drug addicts, people that drink and others. But there isn’t a home for elderly people to spend their last days on this earth being taken care of. We as a congregation would like to have a place for the elderly people and that way we can teach them about the word for when they leave this earth they will be prepared; John 15:12-17.
